道森先生是一個脾氣很怪的老頭，這在鎮上是眾所周知的事。孩子們都害怕去他的院子裡摘美味的蘋果，因為大家都說道森會拿著氣槍追著打進了院子的人。

星期五那天，珍妮特和艾米走近道森先生家時，他如往常一樣眉頭緊鎖地望著她們，可是當他認出艾米時，便立刻微笑著問候道：“你好，艾米小姐，今天和朋友在一起啊。”

艾米也微笑著回答他，今晚她們要一起過夜、聽音樂、玩遊戲。道森先生說，這聽起來很有趣，還從他的樹上給她們每個人摘了新鮮的蘋果。她們興奮地收下了——道森先生家的蘋果是鎮上最美味的。

“是的，”　艾米回答說，“奶奶告訴我，只要我裝作一點也不懼怕，假裝道森先生正在對我綻露他看不見的微笑，同時我也衝他微笑，他遲早會綻露出真正的笑容。奶奶說微笑是可以傳染的。”
